Zhao, Hong is the founder of headquarters economy theory in China. He published the first monograph of headquarters economy theory in China: Headquarter Economy, which has generated positive response in academia and urban department officials. The development of headquarter economy has been regarded as an important strategy of urban transformation and economic development in a lot of cities in China nowadays.

Zhao, Hong has researched mega city governance for decades. He was the first to propose the strategical development of Beijing City Suburban-centers. In 2008, he proposed the idea of "breaking the development pattern of Beijing single center with the construction of urban sub-centers", which was positively approved by major leaders of the CPC Municipal Committee and the Municipal Government. In 2014, General Secretary Xi Jinping delivered an important speech during his inspection visit to Beijing. "Building Beijing sub-centers" was promoted as a national strategy. The ideas and suggestions of "building modern metropolitan circle" which are continuously researched and actively advocated with a positive influence on the decision-making of government departments.

Zhao, Hong has consistently produced high-quality results in science and technology innovation and science park research. The Zhongguancun Index developed by Prof. Zhao and his team has been published in the Zhongguancun Forum and National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Week for nearly 10 years. It is known as the "Silicon Valley Index of China" and has become a barometer of innovation and development of Science and technology parks in China.

Zhao Hong has completed over more than 100 projects of national Social Science Fund, including "Research on major issues of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Coordinated Development". Ten of his achievements have won provincial and ministerial awards, and many of his research achievements have provided reference for the government in decision making processes.
